Ellynne Rey is a Connecticut based jazz vocalist. Possessing a warm mezzo-soprano instrument, Ellynne combines pure clear tones with deep swing in the tradition of classic vocalists like Sarah Vaughan, Ella, Carmen, & Betty. To this she brings her own flavors and sensibilities, drawing on classical, folk, & blues traditions, making her a stand-out. Ellynne has performed and recorded with some of the greatest musicians on the NYC jazz scene. On the music faculty of SCSU, Ellynne teaches voice and piano. All About Me
We Share a Passion for Music
I am a professional jazz vocalist. I am also an adjunct professor of jazz voice at SCSU in New Haven, Connecticut. I am passionate about singing and love to work with all levels of singers. I began my career singing in an all original rock/pop band, writing and performing original songs with the band in the NYC/Connecticut area. After falling in love with Jazz, I sought teachers who would give me the tools I needed to sing like my heroes Ella, Sarah, & Carmen. I also fell in love with the music of artists such as Joni Mitchell and Eva Cassidy. I studied theory, harmony, and piano with various teachers. Always ready to explore and further cultivate my voice, I eventually found my way to John Macurdy, who sang numerous roles abroad and was a principal for 40 years with the MET in NYC. He taught me how to sing Bach, Schubert Lieder, Art Song, and operatic repertoire. While my heart is in Jazz, because of its improvisational elements, I am so grateful for the five years I studied with John. My approach to teaching is a blend of everything I have ever learned as a singer, plus incorporating the method of Jeanie LoVetri, who is the creator of Somatic Voicework (TM). I am certified in all three levels. My ideal students can be beginners or professionals, are curious, open-minded, diverse, have a strong work ethic, value excellence, and are passionate and thoughtful humans. I see myself as a guide. A student needs to be proactive and committed to the learning process. The student and the teacher learn from each other. It’s a partnership based on a mutual desire to sing with heart, soul, musicality, and ease.
